Mapping the occupations, skills and productivity of the heritage craft sector

We are launching a telephone survey of heritage craft businesses to identify key skills and productivity issues.

The survey will be ongoing throughout May and will run alongside a series of in-depth interviews with key heritage craft businesses.

It's part of a larger piece of research mapping the occupations, skills and productivity of the heritage craft sector, commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

The UK’s craft sector is one of the most innovative of our creative and cultural industries, with a real diversity of practice. It is also one of the hardest to reach. While there are many craft hubs across the county, a large proportion of makers and practitioners work alone and tend not to engage with the skills system on a regular basis. In particular, the heritage craft sector has traditionally proved hard to map, composed as it is of so many niche practices.
