Catherine Ritman-Smith
Head of Learning and Engagement, Young V&A

Catherine is Head of Learning and Engagement at Young V&A, building on a rich heritage to create a world-leading museum of design and creativity for children and young people. Before this, Catherine was Head of Learning and Skills at Somerset House where she developed innovative creative careers provision for under 25s, supported collaborations between artists and under-represented young people, and oversaw a diverse programme of public engagement.

From 2009-2018 Catherine was Deputy, then Head of Learning at the Design Museum where responsibilities included overseeing programmes for schools, FE, HE and for children and young people outside of formal learning. She contributed to the development of the museum’s iconic new building and established Design Ventura, an award-winning project for schools.

Other former roles include being Head of Education at Enterprise UK, leading a nation-wide campaign of creative enterprise education, and being Head of Learning at Open-City, the architecture charity. Catherine is a fellow of the RSA and was Vice-Chair of the London Design and Engineering UTC until Dec 2019. She currently serves on the LDE UTC Quality of Education Committee, and on the board of trustees for Creative and Cultural Skills.
