Art valuer

 22 March 2011

Art valuers provide advice on the financial worth of works of art. They value individual works of art and collections, for people wishing to buy, sell or insure them.

Artworks which valuers may have a specialism in include:

  • Paintings
  • Sculpture
  • Furniture
  • Silver
  • Jewellery
  • Clocks
  • Other collectables.

Art valuers must inspect objects carefully in order to determine the value of a piece of work. They may also use reference books, libraries and the internet for their research. They must assess:

  • When and where the object was made
  • Who made the object
  • The quality and condition of the object
  • Whether the object has been restored or altered in any way.
