Ashanti Rattray, Wandsworth Museum apprentice

 28 September 2012

Wandsworth Museum had been renovated, and was just due to re-open to the public when Ashanti joined the team as a Cultural Heritage Venue Operations apprentice.

Wandsworth Museum were keen to employ staff through a different route from the normal graduate pool, getting a bit of a fresh perspective on the new museum.

Ashanti learnt a lot during the apprenticeship.

“I've learnt how to update contact information and a library database in an Excel document, successfully open and lock up the gallery and office spaces and all about working with primary schools and organisations.

"I've really enjoyed working at the Wandsworth Museum"

"I have thoroughly enjoyed changing display cases and also assisting in events such as the Christmas fair and school sessions.”

Getting into cultural heritage

Ashanti had just finished her A-levels and was starting her gap year when she saw the vacancy for Wandsworth Museum on the National Apprenticeships Service website.

"I was interested in becoming an apprentice because I knew I would gain a wide variety of skills and experience in this area," she said.

"While doing the apprenticeship, I've seen that proven: the apprenticeship has given me great first-hand experience.

"While you're doing it, you get to see every aspect of your job role, as well as how those aspects all come together."

Time in college

Ashanti’s college training was provided by City of Westminster College on a day release basis, one day in college per week.

"An apprenticeship helps you to see every aspect of a job role and how they all come together"

Whilst at college, apprentices learn the underpinning knowledge that sits alongside their apprenticeship and they also complete relevant projects.

It is also a good opportunity to work with other apprentices, share knowledge and experience and do a bit of networking.

"I would definitely recommend apprenticeships to others,"said Ashanti. "You get such valuable skills and experience.”
