Education staff

 23 March 2011

Arts education staff in the creative industries support teachers and development workers in cultural venues. They work in art centres, galleries, theatres and other venues to provide an educational experience. They may work with individual children or visitors, small groups or a whole class.

The work of education staff often involves:

  • Helping children and other visitors by explaining activities to them
  • Supporting children and visitors to make sense of an exhibition or performance. This is to ensure that learning opportunities are maximized.

Educational staff encourage people to develop themselves through engagement with art.  Educational youth workers may be employed to work in clubs or centres, organising activities such as arts, drama and educational activities. These activities are used to provide guidance in an informal way to young people.

Some education staff have a specific responsibility to ensure that visitors and children can access learning opportunities. They also often have to support visitors with special needs.
