Tell me a bit about Museums Galleries Scotland.

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is the National Development Body for the Scottish museums sector. We support more than 400 museums and galleries, whether it’s through strategic investment, advice, advocacy, skills development or other means.

We work with the Scottish museum sector to achieve the aims of Going Further: The National Strategy for Scotland’s Museums and Galleries, uniting the sector in purpose to work towards a more sustainable future.

Collaboration, integrity, courageousness and a passion for museums shape our approach. We invest in and develop Scotland’s museums and galleries, for current and future generations to enjoy.

MGS is working hard with the wider heritage sector to embed a culture of vocational learning bringing the potential for a more diverse workforce that is reflective of the communities they serve.

What do you enjoy most about working for Museums Galleries Scotland?

I like discovering amazing museums and galleries all over Scotland and being able to work with incredibly passionate and knowledgeable people, who share similar goals to my own.

I am passionate about working with diverse groups and partner organisations and embedding a legacy to help to diversify the sector, so that it accurately reflects our society. In my role I manage over the Skills For Success programme and have a supportive team that are open to new ideas and ways of working.

Is Museums Galleries Scotland working on or developing any new projects at the moment?

It is great to be acknowledged for the work we are doing in breaking down the barriers to entry in the creative and cultural sector and receiving the prestigious national award puts weight behind our programme

MGS is always looking at ways to support the museums sector to develop and achieve their ambitions and we have a lot of great new projects rolling out just now.

We recently announced the museums taking part in our new Board development programme which is going to have wide ranging and long-lasting impact on the sector. Our new Digital Marketing Modern Apprenticeships will also be rolling out soon and we will be raising awareness of the positive impact of museums on their communities around International Museums Day in May through an engagement campaign.

Tickets have just gone on sale for our symposium in June which focuses on learning and promises to be an inspirational day. We are exploring how we can best support skills development in the sector which links well to our current work to develop the next National Strategy delivery plan.

How did it feel to win the Creative Choices award?

It is an incredible feeling to win the Creative Choices award and we are very proud of the Skills For Success programme and the work that Museums Galleries Scotland has done in order to develop this project.

It is great to be acknowledged for the work we are doing in breaking down the barriers to entry in the creative and cultural sector and receiving the prestigious national award puts weight behind our programme. Winning the award against such worthy nominees also shows us we are taking positives steps in the right direction and that the creative and cultural sector believes in what we are trying to do.
