A technical manager in the theatre & dance sector coordinates a production's technical staff. This could include the set making staff, lighting staff and props making staff.
In smaller theatres the technical manager may be involved in hands on technical work. They may carry out activities such as lighting, carpentry or assisting with making sets.
In a larger theatre the technical manager has more managerial duties. They are responsible for ensuring that rigging, lighting, electrics and scenery are properly installed. Technical managers also have to work during a performance. For example:
- Scenery may need to be moved
- Effects, sounds and lighting may have to be changed.
