Visual arts agent

Visual arts agents represent the interests of artists, including fine artists, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, digital artists and textile artists. They work with galleries, private collections, auction houses, museums and art collectors. Visual arts agents may work with emerging and new artists, or those who have become very successful in their career.

The work may involve:

  • Developing a relationship with the artist to enable their work to be accessed by as many people as possible
  • Using their connections to ensure the art is available for sale in as many outlets as possible, including galleries, shops, and even cafes and restaurants
  • Helping the artist to find a niche for their work
  • Representing the business needs of the artist and sometimes helping to develop their career
  • Meeting with the artist to develop a strategy for selling their work
  • Using the internet to promote and sell work, via online galleries and social networking sites
  • Keeping abreast of changes in the art world and markets, both at home and internationally
  • Developing an in-depth knowledge of a particular genre or period
  • Meeting with a wide range of people in the art world and developing links with collectors who may be interested in buying a particular style of art work
  •  Working with arts organisations and festivalsVisual arts agents are usually paid on a commission basis, perhaps 10% to 20% of the work sold. The job can involve working during evenings and at weekends, in order to attend gallery showings and to meet with clients.  Travel is a feature of the work, both within the UK and possibly overseas.
