Martin Roach, group creative director

Martin started out in information design, but soon broadened his offering to other areas of communication design. After working both in-house and for agencies, he founded Epitype.

Simon Webb, digital account manager

Simon works for a global digital marketing agency. He got into account management through a graduate scheme, offering him a structured introduction to his career.



Steve Bamford, artist and scenic constructor

Steve builds and often designs scenery for theatre, film and television production companies. He has worked on films such as City of Ember and HBO’s Game of Thrones.


Kate Unwin, set and costume designer

Kate Unwin is a freelance set and costume designer. Her work is split between home, where she designs, and the theatres where her designs are built.


Lucie saw a gap in the market for a charity-focused design agency.

Lucie Cooper, creative director (graphic design)

Lucie drew on years of experience in publications, marketing and design to launch her own agency. She works solely with charities, doing branding, campaigns and merchandise for print and online.



Lynton pursued an interest in art and design throughout his education, and learned software from an early age.

Lynton landed a job as a junior designer soon after graduating in Graphic Communication. He works on branding and graphic design at Spring.


Sarah Holden, graphic design assistant

After graduating with a degree in illustration, Sarah Holden decided to focus more on design. She now works as a graphic design assistant and also a print maker, putting on collaborative exhibitions. She explained her role and how to get into design.


Alex Marker, set designer

Alex Marker designs sets for theatre productions. He discusses how to make them realistic spaces and represent the context of the play. He also shares his five tips for getting started in set design.

RSA Student Design Awards team

The RSA Student Design Awards have been running for 93 years, helping young designers develop their skills and gain employment. In 2017 the team behind the programme were awarded the Creative & Cultural Skills Design Skills Award.


Stephen was able to learn about packaging design on the job, rather than through courses.

Stephen Shortland, MD

After many years of working in the packaging design industry, Stephen set up New Vision Packaging. His work involves liaising between designers and clients, and overseeing the business and its development.


Miri Birch, costume supervisor

Miri Birch studied design for the stage at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She has now overseen the costuming of shows for a number of theatre companies.


Claire Durrant, user experience designer

Claire's entry into user experience design was borne out of a passion for making products and services better for people to use. She explains how she got there without having to go to university and offers advice for becoming a user experience designer.
