How can I get experience interviewing bands?

Sarah is interested in music journalism and wants to know how to start out interviewing bands.

I am hoping to do Media and Communications - Music Industry at university in September.

I really want to get into the music industry to interview bands, like Bryan Stars does. Do you have any advice as to how I can start interviewing bands, as I have not done this before?

Thanks

Paul Crockford's reply:

Hi Sarah,

You will need to try and get some experience to start with.

Begin a blog or run a Facebook page which reviews shows, music etc and then try and use that to get interviews with up and coming bands. If you can show that you have a following of even a few hundred people on Twitter then a new band will be able to see a benefit from giving you the time. Make sure you are knowledgeable about the musicians, their music and avid asking stupid questions. You need to be able to demonstrate to the artist or their PR company that giving you the time will give them some positive PR.

Good luck,

Paul Crockford
