Which universities are good for a Museum Studies masters courses?

Yolanda is looking to do a masters course and wants recommendations.

I am a recent graduate from the University of Nottingham and I am interested in doing a Masters in Museum Studies and I wondered where the best places to study were?

I would preferably like to do a part time course lasting a year. I have seen a masters at Birbeck University in London on Museum Cultures and I just wondered whether it was regarded as a good institution from which to receive a heritage masters?

Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Hi Yolanda

Although Leicester and Manchester Universitys have more established courses, as an employer I would not look more favourably on individuals with a degree from one of those or any other University. It would be the modules taken within the course that are relevant to the job being applied for, and the content of any placements, work experience or internships that would be of interested.

Think about what you want from a course - does it cover what you are hoping for? Where do the students carry out their placements? Maybe you can also ask them what their alumni have gone on to do - this will give you an indication of how the course prepares individuals for working in the sector.

Best wishes
