We are looking to recruit talented and inspiring vocalists to lead and/or support choirs in our Portsmouth primary schools. Placements will commence from October onwards on a freelance basis, with most school placements consisting of one-hour rehearsals on a weekly basis.

Ark is an education charity and one of the country’s top performing academy operators. Our academies are situated in areas of high disadvantage, with over 30% of Ark pupils eligible for free school meals, compared with 16% nationally. We currently work with 36 primary and secondary schools across London, Hastings, Portsmouth and Birmingham. Our vision is to create a group of outstanding schools that radically improve our pupils’ life chances.

The central music team exists within Ark to support music-making across the network. We believe that a high quality, progressive and diverse education in music is the entitlement of every child, regardless of their background. Our mission is to ensure that every pupil in an Ark school is set-up to enjoy a life enriched by music and the many holistic benefits that brings. We want our young people to leave school knowing that they are creative musicians who belong to a vibrant artistic community.

Main purpose of the job

Ark’s thriving music programme currently supports over 10,000 children across the country every week. Across our network, our programme has a key focus on developing a strong singing tradition in all our schools. Our ‘One Voice’ choir programme supports schools in running excellent school choirs, by providing training opportunities for teachers, pieces of shared repertoire, and professional choir leaders to work with students. We currently have opportunities for inspiring choral leaders to work with our schools’ choirs on a weekly basis, running choir rehearsals from September onwards.

Successful applicants will join our portfolio of musician educators who work across our schools. These ‘Artists in Residence’ are freelancers who deliver aspects of the Ark Music Programme, often working on year-long placements, with some occasional additional work available on our network-wide events. By joining our Artist team, you will have access to high-quality training throughout the year and opportunities to network with our diverse roster of musicians.

Our programme seeks to represent and equally value different kinds of music and musician. We are keen to ensure the rich diversity of our art form is represented in our team and in turn, that our team is reflective of the communities we serve. We actively encourage candidates from a variety of backgrounds, particularly Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) applicants.

Fee: Our artist pay scale starts at £50 for a one hour rehearsal

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the school choir, building up student numbers and school support throughout the year
  • Lead weekly music rehearsals, and identify performance opportunities
  • Establish routines and systems which create a positive learning environment
  • Deliver excellent rehearsals which develop pupils’ musicianship in a progressive and purposeful way, with an inclusive practice that allows all musicians to learn
  • Source and/or arrange engaging and appropriate repertoire
  • Stay abreast of modern teaching practices
  • Attend relevant Ark training days

  • Open and responsive attitude towards engaging and collaborating with a variety of leaders, teachers, students and musical genres
  • Ability to work flexibly to support pupils’ needs

Experience

  • Professional experience as a singer, and with choral singing
  • Excellent facilitator with experience working with primary and/or secondary children on music projects, activities, workshops and classes
  • Experience of building up ensembles from scratch, working with mixed-level groups and developing them
  • Experience of delivering musical activities within a school setting
  • Knowledge of a variety of musical genres/styles
  • Comprehensive understanding of how the voice works, in particular for different age groups
  • A sound understanding of safeguarding procedures, or a willingness to undergo training in this area
  • Up to date knowledge of developments and good practice in music education
