ETO are recruiting someone with a love of opera to support a new programme of work to bring new audiences to our award winning performances and projects; develop our relationship with existing audiences; and increase gift giving to enable us to keep delivering our work across the country.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Development & Communications and across a number of departments, in a new role made possible by the John Ellerman Foundation. We imagine the role to be full time, based in our London office and on tour, but we are in a position to be flexible about the nature of the commitment for the right person. English Touring Opera
Since 1979, English Touring Opera (ETO) has toured outstanding live productions and impactful education and community projects to more towns and cities than any other UK opera company. At the heart of our ethos is making exceptional artistic experiences available and accessible to everyone. We reach over 50,000 people per year with five mainstage productions, two specially commissioned operas for children and young people with special educational needs, a series of creative workshops for people with dementia and their carers, and more than 70 workshops for people of all abilities and ages. We produce ambitious programmes of high-quality, innovative opera that introduce, educate and inspire audiences with distinctive new repertoire. In doing so we advance public awareness, engagement and enjoyment of this powerful art form.
ETO is proud to demonstrate a significant national footprint, touring the length and breadth of the UK, overcoming the geographical barriers that many face to accessing opera and serving many areas of the country with severely limited access to other live performance. In 2019, ETO brought opera to the heart of 31 communities through 162 performances in theatres, schools, libraries and community centres across the UK from Perth to Truro.
Central to ETO’s programming is our award-winning Education and Community programme which annually engages over 12,000 children and adults nationwide, offering the chance to create, participate in and experience transformative opera performances. ETO provide the only opportunity for many schools to benefit from rich opera experiences, providing the greatest breadth and reach of any UK opera company.
ETO has earned a longstanding reputation as an organisation producing exceptional work. Throughout the organisation’s 40 year history, ETO has consistently received four and five stars in national publications, and feedback from our 2018 Seasons saw audiences give 9/10 for the quality of our work. In 2014, ETO won an Olivier Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Opera’ and in 2017 won ‘Best New Opera Production’ in the WhatsOnStage Opera Poll. ETO received a PRS Award in 2012 and were nominated for Education and Community work at the 2019 International Opera Awards.

1. New Audiences
- Formalise and manage ETO’s local volunteer network to facilitate and enable those volunteers to reach new audiences with targeted and personal communications campaigns.
- Work with local partners including venues, music hubs and local authority arts officers to identify communities with low cultural engagement and deliver a strategy to bring them to ETO’s work.
- Develop and manage relationships with local music societies, university groups, U3A groups and community choirs to deliver talks/events and bring them to ETO productions.
2. Develop ETO’s relationship with existing audiences
- Manage a programme of better understanding existing audiences to influence future communications, mainstage programming, outreach objectives and identify volunteers and ambassadors, including, but not limited to:
- Establishing regional focus groups with ETO audiences and non-audiences.
- Establishing an in-person survey programme to take place in intervals and immediately after performances, with support of local volunteers.
- Reporting the findings of those focus groups to relevant internal and external colleagues.
3. Increase Gift Giving
- Deliver a national programme of performance based events (e.g. recitals and talks) to offer exceptional experiences for current Members and cultivate new Members from existing audiences members.
- Revitalise ETO’s long standing pre-show talk programme to better serve audiences and Members and profile our education and outreach programmes.
- Manage Member interval receptions.
- Enable/encourage supporters to advocate for ETO’s membership programme to their personal networks.
- Deliver fundraising appeals to generate additional income for specific projects.
- Ensure that all individual giving activity fully complies with ETO’s GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) policy.
- Ensure the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, is kept fully up to date with correct addresses and contact information, donation details, communication preferences, gift aid declarations and other relevant notes.
- Keep up to date with all relevant regulation and compliance.
- Contribute to the work of other departments within ETO and carry out, within reason, other duties to further the objectives of the company.
- Act as an ambassador for the company at all times.

Line Manager Head of Development & Communication
Start date March 2020
Contract-Type Permanent, full time. The normal working week includes seven paid hours a day, five days per week (a one hour lunch break each day is unpaid), Monday to Friday. Normal office hours are 10am-6pm Mon-Fri, though earlier start/finish times will be considered. Some evening and weekend work will be required. No overtime is payable, but ETO operates a TOIL scheme.
Gross Starting Salary £21,000 to £24,000 per annum, subject to experience
Holiday 20 days p.a. rising to 25 days after 2 years’ service - plus all Bank Holidays
Pension Employees are automatically enrolled into ETO’s pension scheme (managed by Royal London), to which ETO will contribute 4% and the employee will contribute 4% of salary, starting with the first salary payment. (Contribution rates and other terms and conditions of the scheme may change. Employees have the right to opt out of the scheme.)
Office base London (currently 50 Britton Street, London EC1M 5UP, relocating to Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts campus in Peckham in spring 2020). There will be a significant amount of travel in the UK required for this role.
Probation There will be a three month probation period, during which time one month notice will be required by either party. Thereafter, three months’ notice is required by either party.
