Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Hurst is an independent non-fiction publisher with a global outlook. They publish 75 books a year, a mixture of general interest and academic titles, with particular strengths in history, politics, religion and the non-Western world.

They are currently looking for a diligent and organised individual to join their team as an Editorial Assistant. The chosen candidate will play an essential role in helping editors get manuscripts into production, working closely with them on a wide range of books at different stages of the editorial process. As they are a small team, there will also be ample opportunity to gain insight into and work closely with other departments, from Sales to Publicity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Editorial skills (proofreading, copy-editing, typesetting preparation)
  • Assisting with academic peer review & jacket copy
  • Author management
  • Metadata skills
  • Editorial research for commissioning (diversity projects, reading proposals, etc)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrable knowledge and interest in current affairs & world news
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a good eye for detail
  • Outstanding levels of organisation and capacity for independent work
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to learn fast in a small team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office

REQUIREMENTS

  • Undergraduate degree (BA or equivalent level)
  • Foreign-language proficiency would be beneficial but is not essential
