Meet Your Maker – Elgin Cathedral

Two makers to deliver a project for students inspired by Elgin Cathedral.

£2,760 (There is an additional budget available to cover materials.)

Application deadline: August 5th 2019

Craft Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are looking for two makers to deliver a project for students inspired by Elgin Cathedral.

Through this project, you will support young people to use their creativity and take inspiration from the designs and architecture of Scotland’s traditional buildings. By exploring the materials and skills that created these buildings and the historical stories they tell, the participants will unlock the potential of contemporary craft to inspire them to learn new skills and co-design new pieces.

The selected makers will be required to work directly with a group of Fine Art and Fine Art Textiles undergraduate students from Moray College (UHI) to support the co-design of contemporary work inspired by the history, heritage and archaeology discovered whilst exploring these sites together.

The project runs for 11 weeks from Thursday 12 September 2019 until Thursday 5 December 2019. The makers will spend one morning a week (Thursday), each week, working directly with the students either onsite at the Cathedral or in college.

In addition, there is an opportunity to showcase the work and run associated activities as part of a public event at Elgin Cathedral. A total of 12 days is available for development and delivery of the project of which 11 mornings should be spent working directly with the students on site and in college. This time allocation also includes 6 days for project development.

Please note, the successful applicant will be required to submit a basic level Disclosure Scotland Certificate and full risk assessment. This project requires any materials and equipment used by the participants to be delivered to the site, therefore it is required that materials/equipment are easily transportable and suitable for use within a safe environment.

Interested makers should clearly outline their approach, medium to be used, possible outputs and key learning objectives for the participants. We will be particularly keen on creative approaches for engaging students with the design process from concept through to production.
