Job Role & Description

The role of the Programme & Artist Development Producer is to ensure the programme of live performance is successfully delivered and to manage our artist development programme. This role supports artists and companies and takes responsibility for the contracting and operational logistics of incoming companies.

Works closely alongside:    Performance Coordinator

Salary band:                     £25,000-28,000

Terms:                                Full Time permanent contract end date

Hours:                             37.5 hours per week

Base:                               Pavilion Dance South West, Bournemouth


Detailed key responsibilities

Working within the vision and values of PDSW, and the frameworks set by the Head of Performance, the Programme & Artist Development Producer will undertake the following responsibilities.

Performance programme

  • Gather intelligence about dance work available for tour, travel to see work and contribute to programming conversations.
  • Communicate with companies, ensure all contracts and production requirements are fulfilled
  • Liaise with the Technical Team to ensure all relevant information and plans are in place for a high-quality performance event.
  • Liaise with the Engagement Team where there is the possibility of community-focussed wraparound activity, or where the Engagement team are suggesting performance opportunities of artists they’re working with, and ensure roles, responsibilities and budgets are clearly agreed internally and externally
  • Liaise with the Venue Team to make sure that spaces are booked, prepared and ready for the event(s)


PDSW Summer Festival

  • Build knowledge of work available to present in outdoor and contribute to programming conversations
  • Take responsibility for producing and managing the event with the input and support of the broader PDSW team
  • Manage the Festival Budget
  • Generate income from advertising, funding, income-generating or sponsorship to boost the amount that can be spent on the Festival
  • Liaise closely with the Marketing & Communications team so that persuasive communications go to the public and stakeholders in good time so they can plan their visit
  • Evaluate and report on the impact of the Festival


PDSW Summit

  • Support the Head of Performance’s plan for the Summit
  • Lead on the contracting of artists and speakers
  • Liaise closely with artists, companies and other contributors to establish strong relationships
  • Liaise with the Technical team and production leads, ensuring all information required is in place to ensure a high-quality event
  • Support the Head of Performance to manage the event itself
  • Support the Head of Performance to write and implement an evaluation plan with a report that clearly demonstrates its impact on delegates and artists/speakers


Artist Support


  • Represent PDSW’s vision and values across the artist support programme
  • Lead on callouts and input to the selection processes
  • Maintain clear communication with artists and companies and be their key point of contact
  • Manage the residency programme
  • Support the Head of Performance to keep developing the #SWDancing2019 website and associated #SWDancing work to profile dance across SW England
  • Watch performances and ‘sharings’ of work in progress to contribute to artistic and creative conversations at PDSW
  • Contribute to evaluation through ongoing data gathering and analysis.


  • Liaise with the Marketing Team to encourage interest, build audiences and share creative stories from the Artists’ perspective
  • Work with the Performance Coordinator to keep information on events, processes and procedures up to date
  • Collaborate generously across the PDSW team
  • Contribute to the further development of systems and templates so that they’re effective and easy-to-use.

Other Duties

  • Be aware of, and actively implement the organisation’s policies with regard to, for example, Child Safeguarding and Diversity
  • Attend staff and other relevant meetings; participate in training and other forms of staff development
  • Work flexibly to cover evenings, weekends and bank holidays, as needed
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as directed by your line manager

Essential Experience, knowledge and skills

  • At least 3 years’ experience of working in or around the Dance sector
  • Experience of programming and/or creative production
  • An understanding of the issues affecting artists and companies
  • Experience of project management
  • Strong IT skills
  • Experience of managing budgets

Desirable Experience and skills

  • A proven track record of working in a support role with artists
  • A good knowledge of dance and the arts in the UK
  • Evidence of critical skills to influence and support the creation and development of work
  • An interest in supporting work which can relate effectively to wider audiences
  • An understanding of partnership working and working across diverse teams
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a car
