PROGRAMME ASSISTANT TRAINEE ROLES

The South London Gallery is looking to recruit two new full-time assistants

£19,201 per annum (London living wage)

Application deadline: September 16th 2019

SOUTH LONDON GALLERY TRAINING PROGRAMME

The South London Gallery is looking to recruit two new full-time assistants as part of a 12-month training programme for people beginning careers in the arts and cultural sector. This is an exciting time to join the SLG as we move into the second year of our new Fire Station annex, which includes an education space, a kitchen, public archive and new gallery spaces.

The two candidates will benefit from practical work experience as well as an individually tailored training programme which will include external courses, one-to-one time with an industry mentor, membership of a peer support network, independent research time and a range of in-house training opportunities.

RESIDENTS’ PROGRAMME ASSISTANT

The Residents’ Programme Assistant will support the Open Plan project on three local housing estates: Elmington, Pelican, and Sceaux Gardens. Your primary role will be working with children and young people at Art Block, our free space for local children to make things, be creative and play on Sceaux Gardens estate. Alongside this role you will also assist with the development and production of new public work by artists on both Pelican and Sceaux Gardens estates.

HERITAGE PROGRAMME ASSISTANT

The Heritage Programme Assistant will support the SLG’s wide ranging community-centred programme of heritage focused and archival activities. This includes projects and workshops with community groups of all ages, exploring their own stories and history as part of SLG’s central heritage programme, Evidence of Us. Alongside this role you will assist with the running of the SLG’s publicly accessible archive room which opened in September 2018 with exhibitions and digital materials about the history of the gallery, its buildings and the local area.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You will find these roles rewarding if you are enthusiastic and proactive and enjoy working with children, families, older residents and visitors and would like to support them to access the SLG’s wide range of resources and projects.

You need to be enthusiastic about new challenges and excited about learning new things. Some previous experience of working with your local community (through schools, community centres, youth clubs or charities) or in a customer-facing role would be helpful. You do not need to have a degree or previous experience working in the arts or cultural sector.

We are particularly interested in applicants from low income backgrounds and those from black and ethnic minority communities, who are underrepresented in museums and galleries.
