Sotheby’s are giving recent undergraduates and graduates the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of an auction house for their 2019 Internship Programme. Gaining knowledge of great rarities and works of art and working on projects with other fellow interns, you will develop their skills and experiences to prepare for opportunities in both the art specialist and business aspects of a unique organisation.

NOTE: This programme will not commence until July 2019 and October 2019, so upon completing your application please state your preferred date in your cover letter. Note also that you will not be contacted regarding your application until April 2019.


Assisting Experts

  • Printing out images for research
  • Research for General Enquiries/Works for Auction/Works for PTS
  • Art-Net/Databases
  • Auction Cards
  • Catalogue Raisonnées

Assisting Administrator/Department Assistant

  • Cataloguing Systems
  • Digital Image System
  • Client System

In the lead up to the sale

  • Download images/condition reports
  • Assisting in the putting together of e-catalogues
  • Maintenance of label holders
  • Running Bids / Bid Spotting

Library and Archive

  • Cataloguing/shelving books and chasing missing books
  • File cards in the department archive
  • Putting aside auction catalogues for binding together with sale results sheets


  • A strong academic record in at least one of the following fields: Art History, Gemology, Horology, Art Business, Business Management, Digital Marketing, E-commerce, Economics, modern languages.
  • Knowledge of the creative industry/art world
  • Teamwork experience
  • Curiosity and passion for learning
  • A high emotional IQ
  • Strong communication skills
  • International experience/fluency in foreign languages are valuable, but not required


  • International applicants must be in possession of valid working papers for the UK – Sotheby’s does not sponsor visas for interns
  • All internships are for a period of 3 months; candidates must be available on a full-time basis to commit to this period

Candidates should be undergraduate / postgraduate students or have graduated from university
