Training and Development Consultant at a national museum
Fiona West has been in charge of staff training and development at a national museum since 2007. She is responsible for the development of the museum’s staff training programme; ensuring the delivery of the annual training plan and overseeing the strategic requirements of the training and development function for the museum. She supports the needs of colleagues within the museum in order for them to have the skills and knowledge to fulfill the museum’s strategic aims.
Fiona’s areas of specialism are in developing, and delivering, programmes that support learning in management and soft skills; providing coaching and mentoring for managers and staff and delivering psychometric testing for team development and recruitment. She often runs tailored team events and courses; and provides 1-1 career guidance for museum staff.
Fiona is an accredited training professional; having obtained her CIPD Certificate in Training Practice she has gone on to become Test User (Occupational Ability and Personality: BPS Level A and B) certified; and is also qualified to deliver Belbin assessments. She is an Associate of the CIPD and a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
Originally an HR generalist, she previously worked within the music business, specialising in training for the last seven years of her time within that industry. Prior to that she worked for BBC local radio as a Radio Production Assistant; and has written for a number of music and HR industry journals. Her roots, though, originally lay in theatre and she undertook a two-year theatre studies course at the Harrogate College of Arts.
Finally, Fiona is an active member of a network of training and HR specialists from across museum, gallery, and cultural heritage and arts organisations. Meeting quarterly she provides guidance, or leads, on initiatives with colleagues from across the sector.
