Being a National Skills Academy member college means benefiting from the brokerage of key partnerships. We spoke to the City of Wolverhampton College about their experience of a partnership with BBC Introducing.

Students can put their learning into practice outside the classroom.

BBC Introducing is an iniative across the BBC Radio Statio which showcases unsigned, self-signed and other emerging artists, primarily from the UK.

National Skills Academy member colleges have had the opportunity to partner with BBC Introducing. This gives them the chance to share platforms and facilities, and offers them showcasing and development opportunities for new talent, including member college students.

Michael Dixon, Head of the Faculty of Technology, Creative and 6th Form Studies said

“Two areas of our college have been involved so far, Media and Music. Without question it has been a fantastic project for us and we’d love to do more.”

It has been a fantastic project for us and we’d love to do more.

“We have worked with some amazing artists and our students have created music videos to help showcase their work. We have filmed 3 bands altogether and have another booked in.”

“Now we even have one of the leads of a band we worked with, KIOKO, teaching for us! Win-Win!”

“The project, from a media perspective, has been the catalyst to extend students' learning in class by working with a live client in a true outside location setting."

"The students manage the production of the videos through every stage of the process: planning, pre-production, production and post production."

"Students are enthused and fascinated by the process and in turn they step up to the demands of working with music artists and the BBC. It also encourages cross department co-operation as the media students work hand in hand with the music technology students."

"Students’ camera work, editing and production management skills are improved to a huge extent, giving them confidence, knowledge and experience going into their final major projects.”

This is an excellent work experience project in which the learners are working towards a very specific and real brief.

“The BBC Introducing project has given the learners experience in a variety of areas so far, including project management."

"Students make the initial contact with the act, after recommendation from Louise Brierley (BBCWM),  and they're also involved with planning and executing the stage, sound and lighting design."

"This is an excellent work experience project in which the learners are working towards a very specific and real brief. Professionalism and working to deadlines has been paramount as well as being able to showcase their technical skills."

"All of the learners that have worked on the projects so far have been proud to do so and very much see the value in the project. They are committed to the result and this is evident in the work that has been produced.”

The opportunities offered by the college’s partnership with BBC Introducing is a genuine industry experience which supports real-life professional progression. It also enables students to achieve a Gold Arts Award. As Michael says, it really is a ‘Win-Win’ all round!
