Our campaign

Building a Creative Nation is a call to all creative organisations to create jobs and to promote responsible and sustainable recruitment practices.

The creative sector is the fastest-growing part of the UK economy, contributing £84.1bn each year.

The future depends on the way we recruit and nurture new talent.

Despite this, it is harder than ever to break into the sector. The practice of long-term unpaid internships is indefensible because it shuts out those who cannot afford to subsidise their placements. This narrows the pool of talent available to a sector which needs creativity and diversity to thrive.

Young people are the lifeblood of the creative industries, and our campaign champions youth employment and fair access.

The Building a Creative Nation campaign will create 6,500 work opportunities through paid internships, apprenticeships and pre-employment training opportunities.

We are doing this through our Creative Employment Programme and Creative Skills Initiative, funded by Arts Council England, as well as working with industry partners in Northern IrelandScotland and Wales.
